Using satellite data to insure Livestock: IBLI and the development of the world’s first insurance for African pastoralists
In Kenya, more than 3 million pastoralist households are regularly hit by increasingly severe droughts. For over 7 years, ILRI and its partners have endeavored to bring the benefits of insurance to the ASALs of East Africa. This is a story about IBLI (Index-Based Livestock Insurance), a product designed to help protect pastoralists and their livestock against the effects of prolonged forage scarcity.
We hope this case study will spur your students to think critically and creatively about extending financial services to the last frontier of the developing world.
